This life offers so many things. It is a wonder that all people aren't confused about which to "focus" on.

Do I stop and smell the roses or do I calculate the distance to the next step?
Do I paint? Do I compose? Do I study? Do I fight? Plant? Love?

Do I specialize in only one of lifes many offerings?

And if I do, then Why?

A hard thing to do, is place a word into a tune. And even more difficult is to build a tune around a word - a concept - a feeling. The most difficult thing to do is wait for some meaning to come. This wait is coupled with the anguish that is brought on from the strength of the content and context of the song.

For instance the following line:

'These are my hands.'

To follow this I would probably run through the gambit of ideas like: help, hurt, hold, heal yada yada yada. Those concepts are well understood and are easily swallowed.

To work a rhyme perhaps:

'These are my hands.
I do as I can.'

Simple, predictable and bla...by themselves. The imagery is understood. But, it doesn't really leap out yet.

At the risk of picking on Jewel. =) It is necessary to choose wisely the language from this point forward as per my example.

So:

These are my hands, I do with them what I can.
I trust you understand, but how could you understand?

Too many rhyming words. Okay, next problem. What kind of a mood am I looking for?

Sad, explanatory, melancholy, angry, misunderstood...HMPF. It's too bad we can't just slap a smiley in place of the words. [well there it is - a bit of genius]
#####
It's too bad

we can't

just slap a smiley into an arggregate of words.
Why waste the breath, or kick up a mess? We'd only sound absurd!

These are my hands and I do what I can...I hope you understand.
How could you understand?
#####

Even a complete mess like this helps ...there's a few ideas in here.

The list of Recent Visitors shows up as does the comments and Recommendations. What needs to happen there is an image coding scheme for the recommendations - that section should be split for quick reference as to the songs that have actually been played perhaps by listener or just a culmination of song plays. This would be more intuitive I think. A quick reference on one page. With fan activity, Recent listeners and importantly to an artist and a label - what is being listened to. But, for now I will enjoy the ritual of my first cup of coffee.

Music is mathematical. That is a statement which needs no introduction. Scales, modes, octaves are all mathematical components of the aggregate of music. All art forms are expressions of a humans compulsion to approach that which is coldly mathematical. As man, we must measure things. We categorize our music - label our cans - price our liquids - and derive meaning from scrawlings on paper, pinholes, and even light. We give spectral phenonmenon names such as "red", "blue", and "green". We carry pieces of paper in our wallets and purses that have "value" - Value is a measure of an abstract. Just as we have invented time, we have placed another of man's great inventions "value" on this "time". Merriam-Webster defines a continuum as "a coherent whole characterized as a collection, sequence, or progression of values or elements varying by minute degrees" continuum (2008).

In an effort to approach what "art" is, or what "anything" is for that matter, Man Must Measure. We chunk things as programmers. We make them into cognitive 'bite-sized' pieces.

We do this because there is no way for man to explain the continuum...all man can do is describe the "biggest" while there will always be a bigger "biggest" and a smaller "smallest".
